People often wonder how our ancestors survived with very little incomes and a whole lot of children. They didn’t talk about “making do” as much as they actually did it.
“Make do” is a Bahamian philosophy that simply means trying to make the best out of available resources. Now we have evolved with so much more resources and way less children yet cannot seem to make ends meet.
Maybe we could not understand what we were told. Or like little bad children we simply refused to listen! Either way we think it’s time to take a page out of their golden book.
For a long time we as a nation have struggled to Foster more stable financial lives. It is only logical enough to conclude that perhaps we have not been taught.
Typical Bahamians who grew up eating “fire engine” suddenly feel the need to buy elaborate meals to fit not so sophisticated lifestyles.
For most Bahamians budget is a very bad word and saving is the enemy. According to most local banks the average Bahamian does not save. Poverty is not our problem – Saving is. This is why we need to get back to the basics and “Make do.”
