Bahamas Cosmetologists and Barber Association held the very first cosmetology and Barber competition in the Bahamas, live at the Wyndham Resort’s Rain Forest Theater in Nassau on Sunday July 3rd. The energy charged, electrifying event was highly anticipated and attended by hundreds of fans and customers of participants throughout Nassau.
Dr. Zelrona Mackey, President of Bahamas Cosmetologists and Barbers Association was the MC; along with Radio personality, Empress.
There were four areas of categories: Make Up, Nail, Barber and Hair Battles.
First up was the Make Up Battle which was sponsored by Black Opal. The contestants were given 30 minutes to apply make up to their models. 6 local Make Up Artists took part in this energized competition however, there could only be one winner. The winner of this competition was non other than Ajudah Cleare. Ms. Clear received high scores for creativity.
Second up was the Nail Battle. There were three contestants; Christie Duncombe, Lisa 3 A’S Beauty Salon and Jake Miller of Exquisite Cutz. The winner of this competition was Chrissy Duncombe.
Throughout the Event, there were showcases by a variety of Beauty Salons and Barber Shops including: Latrice Beauty Salon from Bain Town Bimini, Tropical Heat, Phaces, Finesse Beauty Salon, The Cutz Barber Shop, Doc’s Beauty Salon, Styles by Mia, Fabulous Ronnie, Excuisite Cutz, Natasha’s Beauty Salon and Dot’s Beauty Salon.
The event was very engaging as the Mc’s had a number of competitions and giveaways that was geared towards the participation of the members of the audience. These impromptu competitions/ giveaways included: Persons wearing natural hair, mother and daughter look-a-likes and Cat Walk Competition (Cash Prize).
Three Barbers battled for the chance to win this competition. Although only given 30 minutes to create their master pieces on stage. All of the contestants completed their challenge on time and Lexx Brown of Rising Stars Beauty Salon emerged as the winner. He designed the cartoon character, Stewie. This was definitely a work of Art.
Last but certainly not least was the Battle of the Hair Style. Major sponsor of the event, Bijoux supplied all of the contestants/ stylists with a variety of hair to work with; 27 pieces, Yaki and more. All models wore caps or had their hair braided for the application of weave. There were 8 Contestants for this segment, representing Beauty Salons throughout New Providence. The ladies had one hour to weave, cut and style. This segment was indeed one to behold as it was exciting, electrifying and captivating to see the contestants work with such speed and excellence, trying to complete this task. They all made it seem effortless. Within 30 minutes, contestant number 5 had completed her task of weaving, cutting and styling. This was truly amazing to see. The contestants were graded on a number of criterias including: Creativity, Speed and Execution. Everyone did an exceptional job but there could only be one winner. Emerging as winner of the First Hair Battle in The Bahamas was Contestant number #6, Miss Monique Pratt- Ferguson. Ms. Pratt- Ferguson won $1,200.00 cash and the title as the First Bahamian Hair Battle winner. $10,000.00 was given in cash and prizes to the winners of the various segments and the participating audience members.
Judges for the competition were; Tim Lee, Marketing Director of Beauty Elements, Dr. Clifford Humes J.P (Cliffy’s Barber), Dr. Vienna Clarke (Cosmetology Instructor, Aquinas College), Mrs. Sandradee Gorden (C.P.A), Dr. Tiffany Rolle (Roses Nails Salon), Mrs. Mitzie Turnquest (Signature Styles).
The event was a tremendous success!
