Homemade Mosquito Repellents

Homemade Mosquito Repellents

Posted on 16 August 2011 by bahamianillustrated

There have been numerous reports of “dengue fever” throughout a few of our Bahamian islands. Unfortunately some people have also reported experiencing difficulty in finding mosquito repellent solutions in stores. To assist our much loved Bahamian society, we saw it fit to share some secrets of veteran campers who have had their share of the great outdoors.

Combine a few different insect-repelling natural oils. If you are making large amounts of insect repellent, a good rule of thumb is to mix the repellent so it’s 5-10% essential oil, so mix 1 part essential oil with 10-20 parts carrier oil or

  • 10-25 drops (total) of essential oils
  • 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil or alcohol

Natural Mosquito Repellent Ingredients

Essential Oils

  • Cinnamon oil (mosquitoes)
  • Lemon eucalyptus or regular eucalyptus oil
  • Citronella oil
  • Castor oil

Safe carrier oils and alcohols include:

  • olive oil
  • sunflower oil
  • any other cooking oil
  • witch hazel
  • vodka

Tip: Dilute oil with another oil or alcohol since oil does not mix well with water.

Safety Warnings: Be careful to use oils that are safe on your skin.  If you are pregnant or nursing please consult your physician before using any natural or purchased repellents. If you are not pregnant or unsure of any potential allergic reactions be sure to do a skin patch test by testing a small portion on the inside of a small section of your arm.

We hope this really helps in the prevention future outbreaks.

Marilyn’s Book Signing at the International Bazaar

Marilyn’s Book Signing at the International Bazaar

Posted on 06 August 2011 by bahamianillustrated

Kids enjoyed a free filled day. They were able to get their faces painted for free and were seen walking briskly wearing Marilyn’s book characters: Shelly and Tiny. Bouncing castles were also free and more than enough were available for the children to have fun in. If that was not enough FREEdom for the children hear this: “each child was able to also receive free school supplies!”

It was August Monday, August 1st, when local Bahamian Author, Marilyn Laing released her first book entitled “Why the Turtle and Snail carry their houses on their backs?”  This was no ordinary book launch. Entertainment and activities were available for the whole family. Finger food and cool drinks were served by Cindy’s Roti Hut.

After the Pathfinder’s Band had already shook the floor the crowd was blown away by the Xclusiv Crew’s dance performance
