McCleans Town 39th Annual Conch Cracking - 2011 5

In 1972, an English Teacher by the name of Jeffrey Morgan was looking for a way to raise funds for the Primary School and entire community of McLeans Town. Due to the settlements rich resources of Conch, it was decided to create a festival surrounding the settlement’s popular Dish, Conch. It was agreed to incorporate a Conch Cracking Contest, and also include local vendors to set up booths and sell dishes conch related.

39 years later, McCleans Town Conch Cracking is still the longest running Festival on Grand Bahama. The festival was held on Friday, October 14TH. The Event started at 2:00pm and concluded at 8pm. This year’s Festival was bigger and better than ever. There were visitors on site that attends this Discovery Day Festival annually.

Giving the opening remarks was Director of Ministry of Tourism and Aviation, Ms. Karen Seymour. In attendance were Parliamentarians such as: Minister Kenneth Russell, Minister Byron Woodside and Senator Frederick McAlpine.

Organizers had a slate of fun filled activities lined up for their many visitors and Locals alike. There were performances by: The McLeans Town Girls Club, New Wave Dancers, A local Rake N Scrape Group, Classic Dancers and our very own; Grand Bahama Royal Bahamas Police Force Pop Band. The Police Force Band gave the public a number of popular, interactive pieces. It was a proud moment to know that Grand Bahama now has their very own Police Band.

The New wave Dancers really got the crowd involved and engaged in their dance routines also. The signature number for the Dancers for the afternoon was “Knocking The Conch Style”. They demonstrated the dance and encouraged visitors to join them on the stage to learn this native dance. There were also a conch eating contest; of which both locals and Tourists participated.

The legendary K.B (Kirkland Bodie), gave a highly charged performance and needless to say, all in attendance were captivated by his energy and ability to hypnotize the audience.

Although every activity and performance are note worthy; The highlight of the event was the famous Conch Cracking Contest. Before the start of the contest, a local McLean’s Town Fisherman demonstrated to the group step by step, how to Crack a Conch.

The competition was broken down into Four Categories: Visitors- Ladies, Visitors- Men, Locals- Ladies, Locals-Men.

Overall, the 39TH Annual Conch Cracking Festival was a much needed injection into the  Mc Leans Town Community and a tremendous success.

Signs You’re dating a married man

Signs You’re dating a married man

Posted on 08 October 2011 by bahamianillustrated

There is a ridiculously high amount of women in our country who are dating married men. Contrary to belief this might not be intentional at all. At least not for the ladies. Sometimes women get themselves in relationships and place very little emphasis knowing the status of their new-found territories. All they know is that they found a new guy at an unusual spot and viola. Before they know it they end up pregnant and he’s on to the next one. This article was not made to mash any corn. It is simply meant to be an informative one because this nonsense just has to if not stop or at least slow down.

Signs you’re dating a Married Man:

  1. You met at a Bar. Dr. Phill and a few others made clear that this is a very popular spot for married men. They go to bars hoping to get lucky.
  2. You have one phone number for him (Particularly a cell phone number). This also applies to men with more than one cell phone.
  3. You call each other pet names or he doesn’t use your name. He rarely use your name. It is so bad that you sometimes wonder if he forgot it!
  4. He takes you to secluded places. When you get together it is in isolated places, far from his typical areas, or even to other islands while he is on business trips.
  5. He steps out to answer his cell phone. You’re on a nice date everything is perfect. His phone rings and he runs out for long periods of time.
  6. He does not take you home. It is not like he wants you to see his family photos or discover that he really does have a house phone and a pretty little wife!
  7. You don’t meet his friends or you always end up around the same people or a select few that he knows and also knows that he his cheating.
  8. He has a slight tan  line or indentation on his ring finger
  9. You never meet at arranged times. Only erratic ones
  10. He has a few trained habits that are obviously passed on to him from his wife. (Washing dishes after himself, puts the toilet seat down after use…)
  11. Does not wear a variety of underwear or mostly wears unattractive tighty whities
  12. He pays for everything in cash! Including hotel accommodations, shopping trips, and more! Simply because his wife most likely has access to his credit card records. He won’t want her to know about that fancy suite he got for him and his sweetie.

The only time you talk is between 8am and 5pm or his normal working time. You mostly get to see him during the day or before the weekend.

If your dates or conversations typically end with sex and you have just met and it is safe to say that you are just his ting on the side.

If your man has a number of these things you should take another quick look at his ring finger! Get him to pick something up that requires him to use both hands. DO what ever it takes. Just know your status, know your Sweetie.

Extra-Ordinarily Ordinary Interview with Bataya’s Chief Designer

Extra-Ordinarily Ordinary Interview with Bataya’s Chief Designer

Posted on 05 October 2011 by admin

We had the pleasure of interviewing the Chief Designer and Head of Bataya Apparel Co, Mr. Darrin Storr. He is one of those creative minds that you just have to find yourself next to at some point in your life. He’s an artist who has a knack for exceptional design.

After digging our dirt we managed to speak to Darrin ourselves. We eagerly asked him a few questions.

While we prepped him with a few questions to break the ice, admittingly he said “Being a Designer wasn’t a realization it was more of an artistic coming of age. As I grew older I became more in tune with people’s fashion sense, and that eventually became a serious creative outlet, and before I knew it I transformed to Darrin Storr Chief Designer and Head of Bataya Apparel Co!”

Don’t you ever wonder sometimes who inspire the people we aspire to be like? We sure do! So of course we just had to ask the very talented and very much inspirational Darrin Storr, Who is your biggest inspiration in the Designing Industry? He responded saying:

“My biggest Inspirations in the industry are actually not in the industry so to speak…first is my mother. Seamstress Extraordinaire and fashion genius the late legendary Valda Duncombe and second is my better half ,the Co/Ceo of Batya, my partner and my best friend Sania Johnson, both these women impacted me in believing I can accomplish anything. For instance my mom, could look at any thing created by any of these famous designers, and duplicate it. But her thing was don’t duplicate, create, and make it your own. Sania is like an invisible driving force that keeps me motivated and abreast on the latest fashions, designs, and everything I need to know about the industry, pretty much the neck that turns the head. With out them there would be no Darrin Storr, and there would be no Bataya.”

Businessman and family guy? Can anyone say perfect catch? That alone sets Mr. Storr apart from the average man, but we wanted to know what sets Bataya apart from the competition. He replied:

“I think what sets Bataya apart from the competition is the fact that we strive to make every individual, feel like an individual, like they too could stand out in a crowd, no matter their looks size shape or color. To me each person is a canvas, and their beauty is in every picture. That’s where we come in – we bring out that beauty for the universe to see. As Bataya progresses their will be a line for all walks of life. Big , small, tall, heavy, slim, slender, solid, petite, etc…I believe every body deserves a chance to look and feel good about themselves. Hence the Bataya Slogan : Extra-Ordinarily Ordinary”

Apparently no one is excluded from the unique designs of Bataya, so we wanted to know of any High Profile clients that he has designed clothing for.

“We don’t like to class our clients to be honest because like I said before, Bataya is for everybody, not just those who are classed as the “somebodies” in life..so I would say all our clients have been high profile in my book..But project wise we’ve designed for a few well known local Music groups like Hunters Vietnam, The evolution annual fashion show and our line Val D by Batya Classique has been featured in a shoot for the 2011 Miss Bahamas organization pageant…as well as the whole Bahamas” (Independence Launch)
