Besides a few hiccups the Government Employment Programme is an unbelievable success. Newly employed persons are now embracing their new jobs. An opportunity that they had to reach out and get! It seems like it was yesterday when persons were lined up at the various schools/ centres to sign up for this very same program. In Grand Bahama, a three thousand persons applied for one thousand positions.
Nonetheless, a fortunate few were selected. Some employees were single parent mothers, fathers, grandmothers, and recent graduates. What a mix! Companies who were daring enough to participate in this effort were not let down either, most of which are still boasting about the effectiveness of their new employees. Some are baffled at the amount of effort the government took to select the “crème of the crop.” One company in particular who chose to remain anonymous said: “our new employee is passionate about everything our company does and also posses the necessary background skills. We would also like to thank the government for placing the extra effort in the selection process because like most companies we too were reluctant to participate in this programme fearing the worst case scenario.” From here on we will refer to timing as the previously mentioned hiccups in the programme. Employees arrived pretty much unannounced. Employers received little to no notice and were greeted bright and early by new employees. As a result some employees were sent back home because of the lack of preparation and planning prior to their arrival day. All in all, the programme is still an effective one. It is one that has already transformed the lives of recently unemployed persons and their employers alike.
