We had the pleasure of interviewing the Chief Designer and Head of Bataya Apparel Co, Mr. Darrin Storr. He is one of those creative minds that you just have to find yourself next to at some point in your life. He’s an artist who has a knack for exceptional design.
After digging our dirt we managed to speak to Darrin ourselves. We eagerly asked him a few questions.
While we prepped him with a few questions to break the ice, admittingly he said “Being a Designer wasn’t a realization it was more of an artistic coming of age. As I grew older I became more in tune with people’s fashion sense, and that eventually became a serious creative outlet, and before I knew it I transformed to Darrin Storr Chief Designer and Head of Bataya Apparel Co!”
Don’t you ever wonder sometimes who inspire the people we aspire to be like? We sure do! So of course we just had to ask the very talented and very much inspirational Darrin Storr, Who is your biggest inspiration in the Designing Industry? He responded saying:
“My biggest Inspirations in the industry are actually not in the industry so to speak…first is my mother. Seamstress Extraordinaire and fashion genius the late legendary Valda Duncombe and second is my better half ,the Co/Ceo of Batya, my partner and my best friend Sania Johnson, both these women impacted me in believing I can accomplish anything. For instance my mom, could look at any thing created by any of these famous designers, and duplicate it. But her thing was don’t duplicate, create, and make it your own. Sania is like an invisible driving force that keeps me motivated and abreast on the latest fashions, designs, and everything I need to know about the industry, pretty much the neck that turns the head. With out them there would be no Darrin Storr, and there would be no Bataya.”
Businessman and family guy? Can anyone say perfect catch? That alone sets Mr. Storr apart from the average man, but we wanted to know what sets Bataya apart from the competition. He replied:
“I think what sets Bataya apart from the competition is the fact that we strive to make every individual, feel like an individual, like they too could stand out in a crowd, no matter their looks size shape or color. To me each person is a canvas, and their beauty is in every picture. That’s where we come in – we bring out that beauty for the universe to see. As Bataya progresses their will be a line for all walks of life. Big , small, tall, heavy, slim, slender, solid, petite, etc…I believe every body deserves a chance to look and feel good about themselves. Hence the Bataya Slogan : Extra-Ordinarily Ordinary”
Apparently no one is excluded from the unique designs of Bataya, so we wanted to know of any High Profile clients that he has designed clothing for.
“We don’t like to class our clients to be honest because like I said before, Bataya is for everybody, not just those who are classed as the “somebodies” in life..so I would say all our clients have been high profile in my book..But project wise we’ve designed for a few well known local Music groups like Hunters Vietnam, The evolution annual fashion show and our line Val D by Batya Classique has been featured in a shoot for the 2011 Miss Bahamas organization pageant…as well as the whole Bahamas” (Independence Launch)
